Education, Rehabilitation and Support Program

Due to the gradual peace process now taking place in conflict regions of Uganda, many displaced individuals are leaving IDP camps for their original communities, which have yet to return to pre-war functioning. Consequently, this educational initiative in partnership with UNICEF aims to alleviate overcrowding and inadequate resources in primary schools located in high need districts by constructing and supplying five schools in the Gulu and Amuru districts in dire need of assistance.

In addition to providing classrooms and teaching materials, Visions in Action is promoting gender equality through the Girls Education Movement, self-defense training (for the girls), and a workshop on sexual exploitation and abuse awareness for both students and faculty. Teacher retention is being promoted through provision of free housing and transportation for teachers, and the creation of parent-teacher associations and school management committees is promoting community involvement in primary education. Teachers are also being trained in remedial education and school management.

The Visions in Action/UNICEF project concluded this year and helped 3,000 students and 100 teachers in northern Uganda by restoring education to communities disrupted by the war and updating curriculum, teaching methods, and classroom conditions.
