Individuals selected for the supported volunteer program directly assist the existing Visions in Action development initiatives created in conjunction with the World Food Program, the US Agency for International Development, and the US Department of Agriculture. Volunteers work in the fields of agricultural development, nutrition, or education and provision of educational supplies.

Supported volunteers (SVs) have the opportunity to work with Visions in Action and USDA’s Food for Progress program, where they will teach new agricultural techniques, encourage the use of new NERICA rice technology, and distribute tools and seed. In another joint venture between Visions and USDA, the Food for Education & Nutrition program, volunteers provide classroom supplies and teacher training to underprivileged schools and food rations to students to encourage their continuation in school. The WFP’s Emergency School Feeding Program allows volunteers to distribute food to schools in need, while volunteers working with the Million Book March for Literacy program with USAID bring books, libraries, and library training to nearly 2,000 primary and secondary schools.

SVs are hired based on relevant professional skills and work full-time with Visions' in-country staff. They live in Visions in Action's group housing.
